Meet Matt – Electrician/Director

Thanks for visiting my website. My name is Matt Staten and I’m an electrician based in Exeter. Since becoming an Electrician, I have found myself working all over Devon. These days, I usually cover the area between Tiverton to Torquay, Okehampton to Honiton and Crediton to Exmouth.

My long term goal is to run a successful business providing high standard electrical installations and maintenance services.

How Devon Sparks began

I founded Devon Sparks in 2015 whilst I was still working full time for a local Renewable Energy firm, for whom I installed the electrical aspects of Solar PV. With the government promising to slash the feed-in tariff, the trade was looking like it may collapse and there was a sense of panic around the whole sector. Although the firm I worked for was confident that they could see it through and that trade would pick up again, I could see myself becoming made redundant as there was to be a huge drop in sales at the time of the reduction in the feed in tariff.

After starting up Devon Sparks, I worked for myself on Saturdays to gradually build up the business. In January 2016, I was made redundant. So here goes, my opportunity to really make a go of this and become self employed. After landing a few big jobs and also a lot of little jobs, I have not looked back. Perhaps this is something I should have done a long time ago.

So, what have I been doing since trading as Devon Sparks?

Well, there have been a few rewires as part of renovation projects. Some examples of these jobs include: a six-bed detached house in Exeter; a old Laundry that was converted to a two-bed flat in Brixham; a three-bed mid terrace house in kingsteignton; a one bed semi-detached in Sandford.

I have worked on a few new builds, such as: a five-bed mansion located near Rackenford; a three bed bungalow in Tiverton; a five bed detached house in Exminster, two semi-detached houses in Silverton and a block of four terrace houses in Budliegh Salterton.

As well as working on these renovations and new builds, I have also done plenty of work for home owners in their own homes. These include new consumer units, additional sockets, new circuits, general electrical modifications, maintenance, fault finding and rectifications.

I have done some electrical maintenance work on behalf of Private Landlords with tenanted properties around Exeter and also for an estate agent in Exeter. As well as maintentenance, I also completed ‘Electrical Installation Conditions Reports’, also known as ‘Landlord Safety Checks’.

I worked as part of a couple of office renovations, for which I have supplied additional sockets, dado trunking, data cabling and new lighting.

I should also mention that I have worked on behalf of Plumbers, Bathroom Installers and Kitchen Fitters, providing the electrical installations for all of these.

In 2018, I took the business to the next level by setting Devon Sparks up as a limited company and also regestering for VAT. I then went on to employ my first ever apprentice.

So, all in all, it’s been a busy few years for Devon Sparks. Now, I’m hoping that this will continue as I’m always looking forward to what work is waiting for me around the corner. I’m hoping that my next job will be with you so please get in touch.

Meet Chloe – The Apprentice

I’m Chloe, an apprentice working for Devon Sparks.

I joined the company in November 2018 after finally taking the plunge into the world of Electrical Installations, after many years of coming back to the idea.

I have always been involved in the building industry through labouring for family members in the construction trades since a young age. I have always been keen to apply myself to learn new skills and becoming an Electrician was the clear option for me. The complexity of some of the work coupled with practical elements of installations really appealed and I have thoroughly enjoyed my work since I began.

This route into the industry offered me on the job work experience and practical involvement in our day to day jobs, supported with day release at a training centre to gain my formal qualifications.

As a mature apprentice the timing was never better so I jumped at the opportunity of a placement here at Devon Sparks.

Working alongside Matt I have been given a platform to get stuck in and involved on every job we work. His excellent work ethic and high quality workmanship present me with an unrivalled opportunity to learn best practice within this field.
